How to Use a Framing Square & Stair Gauges

A standard framing square features two arms: the tongue (16 inches long, 1.5 inches wide) and the blade (24 inches long, 2 inches wide).

Setting Your Gauges

  1. Clamp one gauge on the tongue at your exact calculated Riser Height.
  2. Clamp the second gauge on the blade at your exact Tread Depth.
  3. Rest both brass gauge edges firmly against the top crown of your 2×12 board.
  4. Scribe the riser and tread lines in a single continuous stroke.
