Steel Stair Stringer Calculator

Design heavy-duty architectural steel staircases. Calculate C-channel length, miter cut angles, and tread bracket locations.

Input Dimensions

Vertical distance from lower floor to upper floor
Desired height per riser (IRC max: 7.75")
Horizontal depth of each tread (IRC min: 10")
Overall width of the staircase (IRC min: 36")
Thickness of tread board (typical: 1" or 1.5")
Tread overhang beyond the riser face (typical: 0.75"–1.25")
Actual width of the stringer board
Stringers spaced max 16" on center
Maximum horizontal space available (leave blank if unconstrained)

How Steel Stringer Fabrication Works

Channel miters, base plate anchors, and welded tread bracket alignment.

01

Measure Total Rise

Measure the exact vertical distance between finished floor surfaces using a plumb bob or laser level. Always account for finished flooring thickness.

02

Calculate Number of Steps

Divide total rise by your target riser height (typically 7.5"). Round to the nearest whole integer to find the exact number of equal risers.

03

Determine Riser & Run

Divide total rise by the number of risers for exact height. Select tread depth (minimum 10") and verify with Blondel’s comfort formula (2R + T = 24–25").

04

Layout & Deduct Bottom Foot

Step off cuts with a framing square and stair gauges. Deduct the thickness of one tread from the bottom cut so the finished first step matches the rest.

Steel Stringer FAQs

Common questions regarding structural steel channels and architectural metal fabrication.

What size steel channel is standard for stair stringers?

A C10×15.3 or C12×20.7 structural steel channel is the industry standard for commercial and modern residential metal staircases, providing exceptional strength without intermediate posts.

How are treads attached to steel stringers?

Treads are attached using welded steel shelf angles (typically L2×2×1/4" or L3×3×1/4") bolted to wood, stone, or diamond-plate pan treads.
